JPG or PNG: which format should you choose?

FormatStrengthsBest for
JPGSmall files that open anywherePhoto-heavy documents, sharing in messaging apps and on social media, blog posts
PNGSharp text and lines with no quality lossCharts, drawings and text-heavy documents, images you plan to edit later

The same page saved as PNG can be several times larger than a JPG. If you only need to view or share the page on screen, JPG is enough. If you need to zoom in on small print, PNG is the better choice.

How to choose the resolution (DPI)

DPI means dots per inch, or how many pixels fit into one inch (2.54 cm). Here are the approximate image sizes you get from a US Letter page (8.5 × 11 in) and an A4 page (210 × 297 mm) at each setting.

ResolutionUS Letter image sizeA4 image sizeUse
72 DPIabout 612 × 792 pxabout 595 × 842 pxThumbnails, quick previews
150 DPIabout 1275 × 1650 pxabout 1240 × 1754 pxViewing on screen, sharing in chats, attaching to documents
300 DPIabout 2550 × 3300 pxabout 2480 × 3508 pxPrinting, zooming in on small text

Doubling the resolution gives you four times as many pixels, so conversion time and file size go up a lot. For documents with many pages, try 150 DPI first.

When converting a PDF to images helps

  • Posting a document somewhere that doesn't accept PDFs, such as some social media platforms or forums that only allow photo uploads
  • Adding PDF pages as pictures to a presentation or a video project
  • Showing a page instantly as a preview in WhatsApp, iMessage or other messaging apps
  • Adding part of a document as an image to an online store product page or a blog post

If you need to do the opposite and combine images into a single PDF, use Image to PDF. To copy the text out of a PDF, use PDF to Text.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting a PDF to JPG reduce quality?
Each page is redrawn at the resolution you choose, so text can look blurry at a low resolution. For documents with lots of small print, choose 300 DPI or the PNG format.
Can I save multiple pages at once?
Yes. After converting, click "Download all as ZIP" to save every image in a single ZIP file. Each file name includes its page number.
Where are the images saved on my phone?
They go to your browser's Downloads folder. On an iPhone, open the Downloads folder in the Files app, then press and hold an image to save it to Photos. On Android, look in the Downloads folder of the Files app.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
No. PDFs protected with a password can't be opened. Make an unlocked copy first, then convert that copy.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser, so your PDF never leaves your device.
