How to use the Line Break Remover

Why text copied from a PDF has line breaks
A PDF doesn't store text as paragraphs. It stores it line by line, the way it appears on the page. So when you copy text from a PDF, you get a line break at the end of every line. Paste it into an email, a chat app or Word and your sentences break off partway through. This happens all the time with research papers, reports, e-books and lecture slides.
This tool replaces the line breaks at the ends of lines with spaces and keeps the paragraphs that are separated by blank lines, so the text looks the way it was meant to. If you need to get the text out of a PDF first, use PDF to Text.
What each option does
| Option | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Replace with spaces | The weather is lovely today. | The weather is lovely today. |
| Join without spaces | (555) 123- 4567 | (555) 123-4567 |
| Collapse multiple spaces into one | apples oranges | apples oranges |
| Rejoin hyphenated words | infor- mation | information |
Use "Delete blank lines" with the "Keep line breaks" mode when you only want to remove the empty lines from a list. It's handy for lists copied from Excel or Google Sheets and for tidying up code.
The hyphen option is useful for books and journal articles, where long words are often split across two lines. Leave it off if your text has real hyphenated words at line ends, such as "well-
known", because those would be joined too.
Clean up cover letters and blog posts before you paste them
If you paste text from Word or Google Docs into a job application form or a blog editor, line breaks and spaces often don't come through as expected, and they can push up your character count. Trim the spaces at the ends of lines, collapse extra spaces, then check the final length with the Character Counter. That way you're less likely to go over a character limit when you submit.
Under the result, you'll see the character and line counts before and after cleanup, so you can tell right away how much was removed.
Make text read well in chat apps and email
Email clients and chat apps such as WhatsApp, Slack and Teams wrap lines to fit the screen. If your text still has its original line breaks, it ends up ragged, with only a few words on some lines. Use "Replace with spaces" together with "Keep paragraph breaks" to keep your paragraphs and remove only the line breaks inside sentences.
For content where each line matters, like lists or mailing addresses, choose "Keep line breaks" and apply only "Delete blank lines" and "Trim spaces" to tidy it up.
