How many kg in a pound? Weight conversion chart
Since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, the pound and ounce have been defined exactly in terms of the kilogram: 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg, and 1 pound = 16 ounces.
| Unit | In grams | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 ounce (oz) | 28.349523125 g | 1/16 pound |
| 1 pound (lb) | 453.59237 g | 16 ounces |
| 1 carat (ct) | 0.2 g | Gemstone weight |
| 1 metric ton (t) | 1,000 kg | Also called a tonne |
Going the other way, 1 kg is about 2.2046 pounds and 100 g is about 3.527 ounces. That's handy for recipes, luggage allowances and shipping rates quoted in pounds.
Metric ton vs. US ton vs. UK ton
The t unit in this converter is the metric ton (tonne) of exactly 1,000 kg. Don't confuse it with the other "tons" you may see:
- Short ton (US): 2,000 lb = 907.18474 kg
- Long ton (UK imperial): 2,240 lb = 1,016.0469088 kg
- Metric ton / tonne: 1,000 kg ≈ 2,204.62 lb
To convert a short or long ton, enter the pound figure (2,000 or 2,240 times the number of tons) with Pounds as the starting unit.
Body weight examples: pounds, kilograms and stones
- 150 lb = 150 × 0.45359237 = about 68.04 kg
- 200 lb = about 90.72 kg
- 60 kg = 60 ÷ 0.45359237 = about 132.28 lb
In the UK and Ireland, body weight is often given in stones and pounds. One stone is 14 lb (6.35029318 kg). The converter has no stone option, but you can convert stones to pounds first: 11 st 4 lb = 11 × 14 + 4 = 158 lb, which is about 71.67 kg.
Once you have your weight in kilograms, check your body mass index with the BMI calculator.
Ounces, troy ounces and carats
The ounce in this tool is the everyday avoirdupois ounce (about 28.35 g), used for food, postage and body weight. Gold, silver and platinum are priced per troy ounce, which is heavier at about 31.1035 g. If you compare a gold price per troy ounce with a weight in grams, divide the grams by 31.1035 instead of using the ounce in this converter.
Gemstones are weighed in carats: 1 ct = 0.2 g, so a 1.5-carat diamond weighs 0.3 g. (Don't confuse this with gold purity in karats, such as 14K or 18K, which isn't a weight.)
Korean units: don, nyang, geun and gwan
The converter also handles traditional Korean weights that you may see when buying gold in Korea, reading Korean recipes or shopping at Korean markets. Gold and silver are still commonly sold by the don.
| Korean unit | In grams | Relation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 don | 3.75 g | - |
| 1 nyang | 37.5 g | 10 don |
| 1 geun (meat, herbs) | 600 g | 16 nyang |
| 1 gwan | 3.75 kg | 1,000 don |
For example, 10 don of gold is 37.5 g. If gold costs $100 per gram, one don is worth $100 × 3.75 = $375. For meat, one geun is 600 g, but fruit and vegetables have traditionally used a geun of 375 g (100 don). Because the two differ, check the gram or kilogram figure when the exact amount matters.
Working out shipping weight in pounds
US carriers and many international shipping services charge by the pound (lb). Most of them round up to the next whole pound or half pound, so weigh your package in kilograms, convert it to pounds and check which rate band you fall into.
- 3.2 kg = 3.2 ÷ 0.45359237 ≈ 7.05 lb. If the carrier rounds up to the whole pound, you pay the 8 lb rate.
- 1.5 kg ≈ 3.31 lb, so you pay the 4 lb rate.
Light but bulky boxes may be charged by dimensional weight instead of actual weight. That figure is length × width × height divided by a factor the carrier sets. Check your carrier's pricing rules as well.
